Introducing Streets of New Capenna: The Latest Magic The Gathering Expansion!

Magic The Gathering, everyone’s much-loved tabletop and digital collectible card game, is gearing up for its second standard set release of 2022.

Streets of New Capenna’, the 92nd MTG expansion, has undoubtedly sparked excitement among fans near and far. Why? It is inspired by modern urban gangster movies, focusing on organised crime. Set in a new location, in an as-yet-undisclosed plane, it will sweep players to the gritty yet glamorous streets of the titular metropolis. Expect a clash from the usual MTG fantasy themes with art deco architecture, film noir aesthetics and several celestial beings.

But what else do we know about the new Magic The Gathering card expansion? Read on to find out!

About The Streets of New Capenna Release

Announced via the Weekly MTG YouTube show in February, Streets of New Capenna will be released in late April 2022, and it’s safe to say it's going to be HUGE.

Only last week, D&D and Magic the Gathering owners Wizards of the Coast gave fans an initial teaser of the new set. While this is taster is very much-welcomed - details still remain scarce - so we can expect to be left hanging for a little while longer until official previews kick off on 7th April.

This being said, Wizards of the Coast did provide us with a sneak peek into some of the upcoming cards, themes, and even special-edition treatments that are sure to get all types of Magic The Gathering players buzzed.

So, what can we gather so far?

The Introduction of Five New Triomes

Hands-down the most impactful news to come out of the latest glimpse into the new Magic The Gathering cards is the confirmation of five new Triomes.

Triomes were first introduced in 2020’s ‘Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths’. They are a collection of rare lands that:

  • Tap for three different colours of mana
  • Feature the three land types that correspond to the cards’ mana
  • Can be cycled for three generic mana

As such, the introduction of five new powerful and useful Triomes will totally transform gameplay.

These cards will be printed in three different art treatments, including the typical frame, a full-art frame, and a brand-new skyscraper treatment that will reflect the elite urban world of the Streets of New Capenna.

The Five Families of New Capenna

The new story and theme behind Streets of New Capenna revolve around five powerful families who rule over different areas of this realm.

Each family is headed by a demon, and have corresponding Triomes. Here’s a rundown of the family colours, traits and powers:

  • Obscura (white/blue/black): A family of gifted magicians and mystics, Obscura leverage their powers to deceive with distractions, illusions and hidden mechanisms
  • Maestros (blue/black/red): A group of elite assassins and old-money vampires who love the finer things in life and will do anything to get them
  • Riveteers (black/red/green): A rowdy, tough crime faction of artisans that get a real kick out of breaking things - whether they be buildings or bones
  • Cabaretti (red/green/white): A clique of party monsters and druids who use ancient magic to sway the opinions of the masses
  • Brokers (green/white/blue): Demonic lawyers who secretly believe a doomsday prophecy of New Capenna’s impending failure

Key Dates for Collectors

In addition to this, Wizards of the Coast also announced that Streets of New Capenna’s physical pre-release will occur before the set’s digital release, an unexpected twist from the last few years of set releases.
